Chapter Four

David was humming to himself, picking various vegetables from the garden. One last big handful of green beans—that would be a good side with dinner. Tomatoes. Always tomatoes. Why did he put in so many plants? He kept doubting that any more would ripen, but every time he came out there was red and yellow to greet him. A zucchini that had somehow hidden from sight and grown almost as big as his thigh. Too tough to cook alone, but he’d grate it for baking.

Thankfully it wasn’t that humid today, though it was still plenty warm. Not hot, though—maybe autumn was well and truly here. He stretched his back and frowned as he straightened up.

Was that the back—?

“Hey there,” Hill called out.

“Hey yourself.” He squinted at his wrist before he remembered he hadn’t worn his watch, not liking a tan line if could help it. “What time is it?”

Hill came over and squatted down next to him, which David appreciated so he didn’t have to look up into the sun—probably why he’d done it.

“Yes, I’m home early. Not sure what time it is, to be honest. Wasn’t really paying attention.”

That was a shocker coming from his type A husband. David barely kept his eyebrow from arching, but was glad he’d subdued his skepticism when Hill took a deep breath and it shuddered out, his focus entirely on David.

“What’s wrong? Did something happen at the Royal today?”

Hill’s laugh was almost not a laugh, more of a rough exhalation. “I guess you could say that.”

Very concerned now, David squared up in front of him, taking Hill’s hands in his. “Tell me what’s wrong. Did…did you lose your job? Was there an accident?” His mind was racing as he tried to figure out what could have Hill so spooked. “Did your mother show up?”

That last triggered a snort and a small smile. Hill squeezed his hands. “I love that you lump my mom coming to visit in with unemployment and injuries.”

David smiled briefly, trying to be supportive, though it would be a hell of a lot easier if he knew what he was being supportive about…

“Okay, okay. You break ’em, you buy ’em. I’m getting to it.” Hill flexed his hands, trying to get him to let go.

David realized his grip on Hill had tightened with his impatience and he immediately gentled his hold. “Sorry. You just look so freaked out. I’m worried about you.”

“Thank you.” Hill blinked fast several times. “For worrying about me, I mean. I’ve been such a dick to you lately.”

“No you haven’t—” David argued.

“Yeah, pretty much,” Hill overrode him. “I mean, I’ve been working my ass off, and turns out it was for no good reason.”

Oh, man, I knew it. “You lost your job? Quit?”

“What? No.” Hill sighed. “I’m really messing this up. Okay, I… I just realized that I’ve been going about this all wrong. The Royal… You know what a big deal it’s always been in my family.”

David nodded.

“And I probably let that drive me way around the bend.
